JURUPA VALLEY, CA (March 8, 2023) – Mateo Salvador, 42, was fatally mauled by four dogs at a Jurupa Valley home while he was working on a project for the home owner, authorities said today.

Mateo Salvador was attacked about 6:50 a.m. Tuesday at the 10800 block of Bellegrave Avenue, near Martin Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department and the Department of Animal Services.

“This is a tragedy, and our thoughts go out to this gentleman’s family and loved ones,” said by Department of Animal Services Director Erin Gettis.

Agency spokesman John Welsh reported that three Belgian Malinois and a Cane Corso were impounded and humanely euthanized by the Western Riverside County Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley this Tuesday afternoon. “All four will be tested for rabies, per our usual protocols,” Welsh told City News Service. “That is something we do for severe bite cases.”

Salvador was at the property to perform work for the owner, who converted their house into a business, authorities said. “It was reported that the victim did some prior work … and had been at the property previously without incident,” Welsh said. He noted that the dog owner was not at the location that Tuesday morning.

The circumstances and probable causes of the mauling are currently being investigated by the Sheriff’s deputies. Salvador was heard screaming, prompting a neighbor to call 911 according to Welsh. Deputies arrived minutes later and found Salvador gravely injured.

Mateo Salvador was taken to Riverside Community Hospital where he died on 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The owner arrived hours later and immediately surrendered custody of the four dogs to animal control officers, Welsh stated.

Gettis regarded that this incident serves as “a horrific reminder for dog owners to be vigilant in keeping communities, dogs and people safe.”

Liability in Jurupa Valley dog bites and animal attacks

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, over 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year in the United States, with over 800,000 of those receiving medical attention. The CDC says at least half of those bitten are children.

      • Almost 1 in 5 people bitten by dogs require medical attention.
      • Children are the most common victims of dog bites and are far more likely to be severely injured.
      • Most dog bites affecting young children occur during everyday activities and while interacting with familiar dogs.

Dogs can bite for numerous reasons, and it’s not necessarily the breed that determines whether they will attack. Instead, a dog’s individual history, training and behavior determine its risk for attacking someone.

Dogs almost always bite as a reaction to something, or as a defense. If a dog is in fear, stressed, defending its territory, or startled, it can bite.

Most dog bites can be avoided, but it’s also the responsibility of the owner to train and socialize their dogs correctly. If an owner knows that his or her dog has a history of attacking people, they must either give the dog more training and discipline, or limit its contact with others until it is better behaved.
