Lake, CA (February 19, 2024) A devastating and violent collision on Highway 20 claimed two lives in Lake on February 12th. 59-year-old Serhii Kalynovskyi and 43-year-old Evaristo Hernandez were both killed in a senseless collision caused by an intoxicated driver, according to authorities.
The sun hadn’t risen as Miranda resident, Kalynovskyi drove along Highway 20 in a 2011 Toyota Prius. A 44-year-old man from Ukiah and two passengers, were traveling west in a 2000 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. The two vehicles were headed towards each other when suddenly, the driver of the pickup either tried to pass a slower vehicle or swerved. Either way, at approximately 6:24 a.m., he ended up in the eastbound lane and crashed, head-on, into the Toyota.
The California Highway Patrol arrived at the scene and found both vehicles completely destroyed. Debris, glass and even liquid were strewn all over the roadway. Emergency medical personnel rushed to help anyone in need. Sadly, they found both Kalynovskyi and Hernandez deceased inside their vehicles. They were both killed in the collision and, sadly, pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.
The driver of the Nissan pickup truck, along with a second passenger in his truck, sustained major injuries in the collision on Highway 20. Police officers determined that the driver of the Nissan had been driving under the influence, however, his injuries were so severe that he had to be airlifted to a local hospital to receive emergency treatment. The passenger who was injured was also taken to a hospital for treatment, officers said.
