Oakland, CA (January 18, 2024) Kim Barranco of Oakland was killed in a hit-and-run on San Pablo Avenue, according to the Oakland Police Department. The 59-year-old was affectionately called “Ladybug” by her family and friends, her mother told CBS News. She was tragically killed on January 9th, right around 1:00 p.m., as she left Serenity House, as she had done so many times before, after volunteering.
Authorities said Barranco was hit not once, but twice, right outside of Serenity House on the 2300 block of San Pablo Avenue. The first vehicle that struck her stopped and cooperated with police officers. The second vehicle, however, didn’t even slow down. Barranco was left with life-threatening injuries as the suspect drove away.
By the time emergency personnel arrived, there was nothing they could do. Barranco was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area in which Barranco was struck is considered to have heavy pedestrian traffic and officers have expressed their concern for driver responsibility in this area. The vehicle in question has been identified as a white Toyota RAV4 SUV.
As an entire community mourns the loss of one of its own, officers are determined to find the vehicle that was involved. In doing so, they hope to find the driver who hit Barranco and drove away. Family and friends have asked the driver to do what is right and come forward. This accident is nothing short of a tragedy and the Oakland Police Department wish to bring justice to light in this terrible accident.
