Fresno County, CA (November 17, 2023) A pedestrian lost her life on Thursday morning, November 16th, after she was struck by a Fresno County Sheriff’s Office vehicle on Highway 180. The collision happened near Kerman at approximately 5:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian, only identified as a woman in her 60s, was crossing Highway 180, near Siskyou Avenue, when she was struck. The California Highway Patrol said that she wasn’t inside a designated crosswalk and she walked right in front of the deputy car’s path. She was also wearing dark-colored clothing which made her more difficult to see. The deputy involved said he didn’t see her until it was too late and he couldn’t stop in time.
The deputy reported the collision immediately after it took place and began performing life-saving measures on the woman. Sadly, the woman passed away with the deputy at her side and was pronounced dead at the scene. Other officers as well as paramedics arrived and called the medical examiner to come to the scene.
The California Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation at the request of the Kerman Police Department. The pedestrian’s identity has been withheld until her family is notified.
